For twenty years (through March 2014), Attkisson was a correspondent for CBS News. In 2013, she received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Investigative Journalism for her reporting on “The Business of Congress,” which included an undercover investigation into fundraising by Republican freshmen. She also received Emmy nominations in 2013 for Benghazi: Dying for Security and Green Energy Going Red. Additionally, Attkisson received a 2013 Daytime Emmy Award as part of the CBS Sunday Morning team’s entry for Outstanding Morning Program for her report: “Washington Lobbying: K-Street Behind Closed Doors.”
In September 2012, Attkisson also received an Emmy for Outstanding Investigative Journalism for the “Gunwalker: Fast and Furious” story. She received the RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Investigative Reporting for the same story. Attkisson received an Investigative Emmy Award in 2009 for her exclusive investigations into TARP and the bank bailout. She received an Investigative Emmy Award in 2002 for her series of exclusive reports about mismanagement at the Red Cross.
Attkisson is one of the few journalists to have flown in a B-52 on a combat mission (over Kosovo) and in an F-15 fighter jet Combat Air Patrol flight.
From 1996-2001, in addition to her CBS News duties, Attkisson also hosted a news magazine called HealthWeek on PBS.
Prior to joining CBS News, Attkisson was an anchor and correspondent for CNN (1990-1993) where she anchored coverage of many major stories including the Persian Gulf War.
Before that, Attkisson was an anchor and reporter at WTVT in Tampa, WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio and WTVX-TV Ft. Pierce/West Palm Beach. She began her broadcast journalism career in 1982 as a reporter at WUFT-TV, the PBS station at the University of Florida. In 1997, Attkisson received the University’s Alumae of Outstanding Achievement Award honoring 47 women who have attended the Universitiy since its opening. She served on the University’s Journalism College Advisory Board (1993-1997) and was chairman in 1996.
Attkisson co-authored Writing Right for Broadcast and Internet News, a college textbook.
